Smash it up

June 4th, 2010 by Derrick DePledge

I want to take a moment, on behalf of former Advertiser staffers Treena Shapiro and Peter Boylan, to thank the loyal readers of this blog.

Many of you have been with us since we started The Notebook as a session blog several years ago. You have contributed ideas that have led to stories in the newspaper. You have helped provoke interesting conversation. You have been snarky but have mostly kept the comments clever.

You should know that you helped make The Notebook among the top-read blogs at The Advertiser, despite the lack of promotion and, well, sports, pretty faces or furry animals.

We don't know yet whether the blog will be around at the new Star-Advertiser. If it is, I invite you to join us. If not, thank you again for reading.

Always enjoyed reading the Notebook and hoping it will continue.

  2. OutsideObserver:

Thank you, Derrick, for all of your work.

I sure hope that this blog or something just like it will be at the new Starvertiser.

While I am relieved that Derrick has been asked to stay on, personnel and other choices being made by the nascent Bullet-iser execs give me to reason to be concerned about whether his services will be put to best use.

In the meantime, I'm glad he has a paycheck, that those who have found a place to land have found that place, and that others who have not have made the contribution they have. I wish all three groups well.

    A hui hou.

  4. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc:

I called the editor's desk today and was told that state and county politics will be covered by Richard Borreca, B.J. Reyes, and Derrick DePledge.

I'm not worried, but I would like to know who will be covering what so I know to whom I need to address my concerns.

  5. hipoli:

Who's snarky around here? I have no idea what youre talking about, D.

We are small family, a little broken at times, but somehow we've created an Ohana.

And thats not even counting all you politco types that just read & dont comment -- but we know youre out there.

  6. shaftalley:

how come the gov't. won't give you guys at the advertiser a bailout like they did for the "investment " bankers and general motors?maybe because you folks didn't donate enough during all the election campaigns? or maybe it didn't cross your minds to ask?i think because you folks are better than what has been going onlocally and nationally with those involved in gov't.

  7. Bongo:

Bongo is dead. May he return to haunt you all in the next life.

  8. hipoli:

    Oh, Bongo, why so dramatic?

Ive been thinking about you, Bongo, since our last exchange a couple of D's entries ago.

One of the things Ive come to actually notice and appreciate about Muf is his loyal legions. Now, obviously you shouldnt be updating blogs on state/city time if indeed you are, but I like that its pretty clear that youre loyal to the core for this guy. Im hoping its not Mufi's 'legendary' bullying that makes you so, but rather his intelligence, leadership, and management capacities that has drawn you in so deep. Im curious if Neil has garnered the same?

Dont go changing, Bongo. I like you just the way you are.

  9. charles:

Hmmm. . . should we all go poof into the night?

Derrick, thanks for the posts. I know it's a labor of love and it's on top of everything else you have to do.

The political beat will get interesting since there is, to put it diplomatically, a world of difference between DePledge and Borreca.

  10. Eric "Muliufi" Ryan:

Thanks, Derrick. Hey, maybe the new blog will require that REAL names will be used. :-)

  11. shaftalley:

do i get the last word? peace.

  12. hipoli:

    R.I.P. Honolulu Advertiser.

  13. THANKS!:

I check your blog multiple times a day. You're awesome! Wishing you the best!

  14. Kolea:

    Hey Derrick,

This place still open? Somebody left the lights on!

Since you wrote we helped "provoke interesting conservation," I kinda feel obliged to shut off the electricity if nobody's coming back.

If the the new "Starvertiser" management doesn;t see value in contuing your blog, it will be a loss for civic dialogue (sometimes even civil dialogue) in Hawaii. It's hard to find the proper balance of informed, reasoned debate and snark, but your blog has been one of the best because, I think, you set an example with your straight-shooting, fair, analysis.

Anyways, so long. And thanks for all the fish!

  15. Keahi Pelayo:

    Derrick,
Thanks for all of the posting. I think the new SA should port you over.
    Aloha,
    Keahi
